Health Issues for YAs --------------------- posted to YALSA-BK, December 2000 I would second the suggestion of books on teen parenting by Morning Glory Press and on the same subject the excellent graphic novel by Katherine Arnoldi _The Amazing True Story of a Teenage Single Mom. Also, _The Teenage Body Book_ by Kathy McCoy rev. ed. 1999. _It's Perfectly Normal_ by Robie Harris (accessible book about sexuality, and health issues that won't be too scary for parents) _Needles_ by Andie Dominick (about a teen who becomes diabetic) _In Control: A Guide for Teens with Diabetes_ by Jean Betschart _When Food's a Foe_ by Nancy J. Kolodny (non-fiction title by a social worker on eating disorders) _When Nothing Matters Anymore: A Survival Guide for Depressed Teens_ by Bev Cobain (Kurt's mom) _Conquering the Beast Within: How I Fought Depression and Won...and How You Can, Too_ by Cait Irwin (teen tells her story with lots of illustrations) _Sexually Transmitted Diseases: A Physician Tells You What You Need to Know_ By Lisa Marr, M.D. (published in 1998 - it may be that there is something newer on this topic that would be better, but you should definitely get something on this topic, in my opinion) --Also, do you plan to get books about different drugs as part of this collection? If so, you might want to look at the Chelsea House series of books on individual drugs, if they are still in print... I think the following books on parenting are worth considering: Altered Loves: Mothers and Daughters During Adolescence by Terri Apter (1990) All That She Can Be: Helping Your Daughter Maintain Her Self-Esteem by Carol Eagle (1993) The Myth of the Bad Mother: Parenting Without Guilt by Jane Swigart (1991) The Difference: Discovering the Hidden Ways We Silence Girls: Finding Alternatives That Can Give Them a Voice by Judy Mann (1994) Get Out of My Life But First Could You Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall by Anthony Wolf (1991) I'm Not Mad I Just Hate You: A New Understanding of Mother-Daughter Conflict: Surviving and Thriving During Your Daughter's Teenage Years by Roni Cohen-Sandler (1999) Ground Rules: What I Learned My Daughter's Fifteenth Year by Sherril Jaffe (1997) Don't Tell Me What To Do, Just Send Money: The Essentiasl Parenting Guide to the College Years by Helen E. Johnson (2000)
